I had the idea for a series of drawings based on floriography, combining two or more Victorian flower meanings with each drawing. I started with pansy and sweet pea (fresh from my mother’s garden). Sweet pea is definitely one of my all time favourite flowers.

Alas, the drawing didn’t really work. There were errors everywhere with composition and shading but I’m going to post a photo of it anyway! I learn a lot more from unsuccessful drawings than from work I’m happy with, so I feel like I need to keep honouring the mistakes as well as successes’.

Here it is as it started and made its way through…
