Rough paper gives you a bit more of a challenge but I love the warmth and depth it gives.
This paper is Arches Rough, 300gsm. It’s my favourite brand of paper. In fact it’s the only one I use anymore. I like the Smooth mostly, but every now and again I use the Rough. It’s perfect for gouache, watercolour or ink… but I like drawing on it, even quick sketches like this one. Maybe it means the paper never truly lives up to it’s potential, but I think that’s okay sometimes.
Visual diary sketches are also one of my favourite things. Capturing the person as quick as possible, or getting the bones of a photograph down as a drawing so I can develop it more at a later date.
Here are a few of my favourites from the past few years.
